We provide the gum care you need, right here.
At Hannibal Dental Group, we know that a beautiful smile is a healthy one. That’s why we can help with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease.
We perform a thorough exam to chart your gum size and shape, tissue condition, any signs of bleeding, plaque and calculus buildup. We will also check bone level, mobility, and signs of tooth recession. We’ll compare the results of this exam with your X-rays to develop a customized treatment plan to meet your individual needs. And don’t worry, your comfort is important to us, so we are always gentle and caring.
What is Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease is an ongoing bacterial infection that not only leads to tooth loss but can also have a systemic effect on the entire body. If left untreated, gum disease may be associated with serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and other conditions.
Early gum disease is called gingivitis. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and tender. The gums may bleed easily, and if untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. Symptoms include bright red or purple gums, swollen gums, loose teeth, and bad breath. Advanced symptoms can include abscess, tooth loss, or infection of the jaw bone.
At Hannibal Dental Group, we can provide specialty gum care right here on site.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Treatment for periodontal disease may be nonsurgical or surgical, depending on the severity of the condition. Nonsurgical treatments are preferred whenever possible, and many times successfully treat gum disease without resorting to surgery.
Surgical procedures include bone grafting to help restore lost bone once the diseased tissue has been removed. Teeth lost to gum disease may be replaced with dental implants.
Scaling and root planing are nonsurgical treatments for gum disease. Root surfaces are carefully cleaned to remove plaque and tartar from deep pockets in the gums. The tooth root is then smoothed to remove bacterial toxins. Antibiotics may be placed in the pocket between your tooth and gum to fight infection.
